    【Attraction】Mazu Temple in Tainan

    (TraNews) – Taiwan is an isolated island with ocean surrounded in every facet. A lot of immigrants from China had gained blessing from Mazu so that they could arrive Taiwan safe and sound. People in both Taiwan and China show great respect to Mazu and there are countless of Mazu temples in Taiwan.

    It is believed that when Mazu was born, the room was filled with fragrant and light. When Mazu was 13, her father and brother went sailing. She fell asleep on the table and dreamt about her father and brother. In her dream, her father and brother had accident. She had her hand holding his father and holding his brother’s clothes with her mouth. However, she heard her mother crying out her name. Upon answering her mother, she dropped her brother. At last, she woke up from her dream and informed the death of her brother. Afterwards, she dedicated herself to religion and aim to save those who lost in the immense ocean.

    The goddess of the sea- Mazu has protected Taiwan for hundreds of years. There is a renowned Mazu Temple in Tainan called Anping Mazu Temple. The temple has over 300 years of history and several branches all over Taiwan. There is even a saying that this Mazu temple in Tainan is the first Mazu temple in Taiwan. When entering the temple, you can see golden main hall and exquisite dragon sculptures which are made out of stone. There are several inscribed boards on pillars. There are 3 Mazu figures worshipped in the temple and they are originated from Meichow, China. The deities were brought by Zheng Chenggong, a commander of Ming Troops back in the ancient times, in 1661.

    Mazu has always been the center of people’s religion. The temple has attracted a scores of worshippers on traditional festivals. There is a custom in Tainan that when teenagers reach 16 years old, a rite of passage will be holding in Mazu Temple. The custom has been going on for over 10 years.

    For a lot of worshippers, Mazu can provides them comfort and secure feeling upon worshipping Mazu in the temple. Mazu is able to provide unlimited strength for the worshippers.
